Devil May Cry HD

Devil May Cry is an action hack-and-slash, first released on the PlayStation 2 in 2001, and was revamped in HD with trophy support as part of the Devil May Cry Collection in 2012, which also includes two sequels. The player fights numerous enemies in stylish combat using a variety of combos, with each mission granting a letter grade based on the player's performance.

Set in modern times, Dante is a demon hunter who, after losing his family to demons, has made revenge his business. After being visited by a mysterious woman named Trish in his office, Dante learns that the demon emperor Mundus, who was responsible for his mother and brother's death, is preparing to return. Dante must fight his way through a horde of enemies to face his nemesis and avenge his family.

The original 2001 Devil May Cry not only received high reception, with an average score of 94%, but became a phenomena inspiring sequels, as well as a manga and animated series. The look of Dante was the inspiration behind Leon S. Kennedy, a character in the Resident Evil series also by Capcom.

The difficulty of his game is purely based on skills, and the high 3-star rating is for anyone new to the DMC series. If you've played the original title on the PS2 and are quite familiar with all the controls and combos, then this difficulty rating could be brought down to a 2-star.

You'll need at least 3 full playthroughs, one of which is completing its hardest mode, plus all the secret missions. Other trophies involve maxing out your powers, a few collectibles in the form of guns, and getting some S-ranks.

Anyone who's played Devil May Cry on the original PS2 and already possess some skills may acquire the Platinum in over 20 hours. For beginners, this may take much longer.

For your first playthrough, we recommend starting on Normal mode, rather than Easy, to get a better feel for the game and prepare you for the coming, harder modes - not to mention there's no trophy for completing Easy. So, if you die three times in the first few missions and the game asks if you wish to downgrade to Easy, make sure you refuse the offer. Otherwise, you'll miss out on the Warming Up! trophy.

There are a number of missable trophies along the way, which might be easiest to collect now on Normal. Check out the Devil May Cry trophy guide links under our Links tab for specific details. Also, try to avoid using your items, such as Untouchables, Devil Stars and Holy Water, as you'll need them in the more difficult modes.

Next, rinse and repeat on Hard mode. You should start unlocking the accumulative trophies at this point, and maxing out your character - specificially Dante's health, to better prepare you for the next mode.

Finally, comes Dante Must Die. This is what truly gives this game a 3-star rating in difficulty, as getting through is far from being a cakewalk. If you're truly having difficulty, you may wish to consider replaying Normal mode again, in order to stock up on items, particularly Untouchables, which can make this mode easier.
