St. Patrick’s Day is fast approaching. And while many of us may not even be Irish, we still like to dress up in green and celebrate. But instead of needing a leprechaun, we’ve got Sony guiding us to the free games at the end of the rainbow, with a total of four freebies this month. And so, here are the PlayStation Plus free games March 2021 which are available for download on Tuesday, March 2.

First, there’s Final Fantasy VII Remake, the 2020 complete revamp of the original Final Fantasy VII first released in 1997 on the PlayStation One. Follow Cloud on his adventures as he teams up with the eco-terrorist group Avalanche to stop the evil corporation Shinra from sucking up the planet’s life essence.

Next, there’s Remnant: From the Ashes, a third-person action RPG featuring game mechanics similar to the Souls series. Wander a post-apocalyptic earth as you set out to put an end to the inter-dimensional evil known as Root that has destroyed the world.

Specifically for the PS5, there’s Maquette, a brand-new puzzle adventure. Recreate memories by performing actions on a table, which causes the outside larger world to follow suit.

Lastly, Sony is also giving away the PSVR action shooter title, Farpoint. Set on a hostile planet, use the PSVR Aim Controller to destroy dangerous aliens and stay alive.

All four PlayStation Plus Free Games March 2021 have Platinum trophies to unlock.

The easiest one, by far, is Maquette. If you follow a video walkthrough, the Platinum can be unlocked in under 5 hours.

The Platinum for Remnant: From the Ashes will take around 60-70 hours of gameplay, but is of average difficulty despite borrowing mechanics from the Souls series.

Final Fantasy VII Remake will require two full playthroughs, one on Hard mode, which in turn will need a lot of grinding to prepare for. Expect around 70-80 hours for the Platinum, and to be challenged during your Hard mode run.

The most difficult of the four Platinums is Farpoint which, though can be done in 30-40 hours, will require some serious shooting skills as well as some strategies.

Final Fantasy VII Remake

Final Fantasy VII Remake is an action RPG and a retelling of the original 1997 Final Fantasy VII. While the game mostly follows the same story, characters, dialogue, and music from the 1997 original, the graphics have been completely redone, and the battle system has changed to a hybrid of real-time action and strategic RPG elements, similar to the fighting system in Final Fantasy XV.

Set in Midgar, a dystopian metropolis, Soldier turned mercenary Cloud Strife has joined Avalanche, an eco-terrorist group attempting to stop the Sinra megacorporation from using up the planet’s life force. As cloud embarks on missions for money, he soon sympathizes with Avalanche’s cause as well as its members, leading him to face a deadly nemesis from his past.

Final Fantasy VII Remake received positive reviews with an average score of 89%, praised for its re-imagining of the original game while remaining true to its roots, new combat system, colorful characters, beautiful graphics, and for being overall superior to its original.

The difficulty is relatively average, although you will need to put in a fair number of hours into obtaining the Platinum, hence the 3-star rating. There are no missable trophies to worry about, as a chapter select allows you to go back and mop-up anything you are missing. Two full playthroughs are required, one on either Easy or Normal, and a second on Hard mode.

Expect around 70-80 hours for the Platinum.

In the beginning, you have the option of playing on Easy or Normal. The former will make the gameplay quicker, while the latter will better prepare you for your Hard playthrough, so the choice is yours. You will need to complete the game on any mode in order to unlock Hard mode.

There are no missable trophies to worry about, so feel free to play at your leisure towards the end of the game. If you wish to avoid much backtracking however, we recommend completing all 24 available side quests, and find all 31 music discs for the Disc Jockey trophy.

After you finished your first playthrough, it’s time to use the chapter select and mop up anything you missed. This will include the Best In The Business trophy for completing all the side quests, as you will need to replay Chapter 9 and make different choices that allow you to complete the previously missed quests. In addition to Chapter 9, you will also need to replay both Chapter 3 and Chapter 8 in order to unlock the different bridal dresses for the Dressed To The Nines trophy. Keep in mind, however, that you will still need to replay the game on Hard mode, where you can complete the missing quests as well as obtain three of the nine bridal outfits, if you wish to avoid much backtracking. Lastly, it’s time for your playthrough on Hard mode. Here, enemies have more health and deal more damage. In addition, you will be unable to use items, and MP cannot be regenerated by resting on a bench nor through completing quests. Make sure to come prepared, such as having useful material maxed out, and acquiring the Gotterdammerung accessory which, when equipped to Cloud, will make things much easier. Hard mode can be selected from the chapter select, though the entire chapter must be played on Hard for it to count.

During this playthrough, remember to complete the missed quests in Chapter 9 and make different choices in order to view the final three bridal dresses, if you haven’t done so already. Completing the game on Hard mode will unlock the Hardened Veteran trophy, and if you’ve been following this roadmap, the Platinum trophy as well.

Tokyo Game Show 2019 Highlights

Just two days after a typhoon ripped through the area, game developers, distributors, gamers, and otaku alike filed into the Makuhari Messe Convention Center just outside of Tokyo, to attend the Tokyo Game Show 2019. While there were slightly fewer companies attending this year, TGS 2019 did see a new record of 2,417 booths (2,338 last year) which means plenty of games to try, and things to see.

The largest promotional event was Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII Remake, being shown-off at both the Sony PlayStation and Square Enix booth. The original Final Fantasy VII was released on the PlayStation One in 1997, and is arguable one of the most beloved titles in the series. Visitors at the Sony booth could have their picture taken while wielding Cloud Strife’s massive sword.

The other big title this year was Capcom’s Monster Hunter World: Iceborne expansion, which is actually a game in itself than simply an expansion. While Sony had playable demos of the game, the Capcom booth displayed life-sized monsters. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne was released last week.

This year, SEGA combined their booth with their subsidiary Atlas, promoting the upcoming Yakuza: Like a Dragon and Persona 5 Royal, both for the PS4, as well as the Mario & Sonic at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games for the Nintendo Switch. Other titles included the Hatsune Miku: Project Diva MegaMix for the Switch, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim for the PS4, as well as games in their SEGA Partners division including Granblue Fantasy: Versus, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, Shenmue III, and Star Wars Jedi: The Fallen Order.

Konami continues to make its comeback with such upcoming titles as Contra: Rogue Corps, and Super Bomberman R. Though most of their efforts are being put into the mobile gaming market, with such playable games as Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls, Dance Dance Revolution, and Beat Mania II DX.

Due to the lack of room, this year saw a lot less arcade-targeted VR titles, and more home oriented ones, including the dancing game Space Channel 5, and a meteor shooting game by students at Kobe Denshi College. Also, with over 4 million units sold, Sony is far from giving up on their PlayStation VR, with such playable games as Marvel’s Iron Man VR, Concrete Genie, and a new Hatsune Miku VR game.

One of the cooler VR accessories I saw were the Cybershoes by a Kickstarter group. Resembling beach sandals, you strap them to your feet or shoes, sit in a chair, and simulate walking or running while playing your favorite VR title. Simple but effective.

With all those extra booths this year, the Indie game area was packed tight with playable titles. Some that I played included Magical Girl’s Chronicle: Magusphere, which combined the cuteness of magical girls with the violence of blowing up tanks and enemies with guns and bazookas. And Liberated by Polish company Walkabout, where you literally play through the panels of a graphic novel. Both games will be out on the PS4 next year.

Overall, there were no big surprises this year at the Tokyo Game Show 2019, but still had plenty to offer and gave us a peak at what’s to come.
