Today, Sony announced on their PlayStation Blog that they will be ending physical disc production in January 2028. This means that any new games released after this date will be digital only for PlayStation consoles.
The post was made by Sid Shuman, Senior Director of Sony Interactive Entertainment Content Communications. In the post, he stated, “In response to shifting trends in consumer preference, new games will be released on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only.”
This announcement just came six days after Rockstar declared Grand Theft Auto VI would not be available on a game disc, and instead a physical retail box would contain a digital download code. Rockstar’s announcement had already caused some backlash from disc-preferring players.
Sony’s announcement has already triggered backlash online from players who prefer owning a disc copy of their games. Complaints range from traditionalists who enjoy displaying their games on shelves, to questioning ownership versus licenses, to the fear of a monopoly of prices should digital games be only available on the PSN Store.
According to an article on G2A.com, 85% of PlayStation games sold in the fourth quarter of 2025 were digital, while 15% of total game sales were made up of physical disc copies. Many speculate that the trend of physical games shrinking is the main reason behind Sony’s decision.
In other news, Sony also announced that the PSN Store for both the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita would soon be closing.
