The Banner Saga

The Banner Saga is turn-based tactical role-playing game which follows an interactive story, and uses hand-drawn animation. While the game follows two playable characters, players build up their party with characters specialized in different abilities, all whom can be upgraded through experience. Choices made in the story alter following events which may or may not occur depending on the consequences.

Set in Norse mythology, the world is frozen in twilight as the sun remains motionless in the sky. Humans and giant-like beings known as the Varls, seek an alliance, as an ancient race called the Dredge return from extinction and seek to destroy all.

The Banner Saga received positive reviews with an average score of 79%, praised for its animated visuals, music, story, and gameplay mechanics, though criticized by some for its steep learning curve.

The hardest part of the game will be learning the mechanics, especially for players who are new to such tactical RPG games. A minimum of two playthroughs are required, one on Normal mode, and another on Hard mode. However, some players may wish to do three playthroughs, the first just learning how to play the game. That being said, the game is not particularly long, especially compared to other RPG titles, and the Platinum is certainly doable once you know what you’re doing.

Expect around 20-25 hours of gameplay, depending on whether you do two or three playthroughs.

The most difficult part of the game is getting used to the mechanics. The game begins with a basic tutorial, but there is a lot more to learn later on. As a result, for those new to tactical RPG games, we recommend spending a playthrough on either Easy or Normal to simply get used to the game, as well as a chance to enjoy it. You will still earn a good chunk of trophies during this playthrough.

Either after that, or if you decide to unlock the Platinum in only two playthroughs, then start up a game on Normal mode. Your main goal here is to finish the game and unlock the Normal Difficulty trophy. There are a number of missable trophies you’ll want to keep an eye on, such as the Quartermaster trophy for not letting anyone in your party die of hunger. And the Forced March trophy which is essentially a speed-run trophy, as you need to reach Boersgard in 120 days. There are a few other missable trophies which you can try to get on this playthrough, so be sure to check out the Banner Saga trophy guide links under our Links tab.

After you’ve completed the game on Normal mode, it’s time for another playthrough, this time on Hard mode. If possible, try to use this playthrough to obtain any remaining trophies, such as the Master Tactician trophy for winning a battle on Hard mode using 6 rank 5 units. You will also want to go for the Challenge trophy, which means completing Hard mode without losing a single battle. This can be tricky, and may require you to stop and reload if any battles appear to be going badly. Check out some of the guides under our Links tab for extra tips and strategies.

After all that, if you are still missing anything, set up another playthrough and begin the mopping-up process. Again, check out the Banner Saga trophy guide links under our Links tab to see what you still need and their requirements.
